Burns Bog Fieldwork

When: Sept. 16, 2021, 4:30 p.m.

Where: Planet Ice - Delta, Nordel Court, Delta, BC

This event is fieldwork for learners in Creative Writing classes with Ross. Fieldwork is typically a bit different from a field trip, which tends to be focused on education and exposure to educational content in a new environment. Fieldwork, by way of contrast, is not so much about where you go but rather what you do when you get there. Learners in creative writing classes with Ross are consistently encouraged to visit new places, discover new things, and leverage these experiences in the pursuit of being more open to the creative process. The projects, readings, and activities for these classes all emphasize the value of going outside, being with other people, exploring new places, and utilizing these experiences to enhance and deepen our own creative work. That's what the fieldwork sessions are for.

Details

The Burns Bog fieldwork session takes place at a location that is accessible by transit, bike, or car. We meet in the parking lot of Planet Ice, as shown on the map below. Parking is free and plentiful. Planet Ice has washrooms, but there are no washrooms in the park itself.

The Burns Bog trail system is 3 kilometres long and takes roughly 1.5 hours to complete. See a complete trail map here. We travel as a group. Ross will point out various items of interest in the park and will also provide time for learners to work on their own.

You must be able to travel at least 3 kilometres on flat terrain. Please bring a snack and an extra layer of clothing.

Attendance

This fieldwork session is open to anyone enrolled in a creative writing class with Ross.
