Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 22, 2026
This site (rosslaird.com) is operated by Ross Laird, a sole proprietor based in British Columbia, Canada. This page explains what information the site collects, how I use it, and what rights you have over your data.
What I collect
Analytics. This site uses Google Analytics (via Google Tag Manager) to count visits and see which pages people read. Google sets first-party cookies in your browser to do this. The data Google collects includes your approximate location (city level), the device and browser you’re using, the pages you view, how long you stay, and where you came from. Google may use this data for its own purposes under its own privacy terms. I don’t have access to anything that personally identifies you in the analytics data.
Contact form. If you fill out the contact form, your name, email address, and message are stored in this site’s database and emailed to me. I use that information only to reply to you. I don’t add it to any mailing list — there is no mailing list.
Server logs. Like every web server, this site’s hosting provider (CodeRed Cloud) keeps standard access logs that include IP addresses, request paths, and timestamps. These are used for security and troubleshooting.
Functional cookies. This site sets Django session and CSRF cookies, which are required for the site to work safely. They don’t track you across other sites.
What I don’t collect
No Facebook Pixel, no advertising trackers, no third-party retargeting, no email mailing list signup, no user accounts, no AI training scrapes of your input. The only third parties that touch your data are Google (analytics) and CodeRed Cloud (hosting). I don’t sell, rent, or share your information with anyone else.
How long things are kept
- Contact form messages: kept as part of normal email correspondence. You can ask me to delete yours at any time (see “Your rights” below).
- Server logs: typically 30 days, managed by the hosting provider.
- Analytics data: managed by Google according to its own retention policies.
Your rights
If you live in Canada (PIPEDA, BC PIPA): You can ask what personal information I have about you, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it. Email ross@rosslaird.com. I’ll respond within 30 days.
If you live in the European Economic Area, the UK, or Switzerland (GDPR/UK GDPR): You have the rights above plus the right to data portability, the right to object to processing, the right to restrict processing, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. The legal bases I rely on are legitimate interest (analytics, server logs, security) and your consent (contact form, since you initiate it).
If you live in California (CCPA/CPRA): You have the right to know what personal information has been collected about you, the right to correct or delete it, and the right to opt out of any “sale” or “sharing” of personal information. I do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
To exercise any of these rights, email ross@rosslaird.com.
How to opt out of analytics
You can install Google’s browser opt-out add-on, use a content blocker like uBlock Origin to block Google Tag Manager, or use a browser (Brave, Firefox with strict mode, Safari with ITP) that blocks third-party tracking by default.
Security
The site runs over HTTPS. Form submissions and admin sessions are encrypted in transit. The database is hosted by CodeRed Cloud and protected by their security controls. Despite reasonable safeguards, no system is perfectly secure — if you become aware of a vulnerability, please email me.
Children
This site isn’t directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in jurisdictions where that’s the threshold), and I don’t knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has submitted personal information through this site, contact me and I’ll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If I change this policy, I’ll update the date at the top and post the new version here. For substantive changes, I’ll add a notice at the top of the page for at least 30 days.
