Working with groups is immensely rewarding and uniquely challenging, requiring of the facilitator a particular blend of professional skills and self-awareness that develops only through practice and experiment. This training is designed to offer learners a wide spectrum of both theoretical and experiential approaches to group work, focusing especially on core facilitation skills.
We will examine group dynamics and evolution, interpersonal relationships (e.g. conflicts, alliances and other structures), leadership styles, curriculum development, and the role of health and healing practices. The training incorporates a trauma-informed perspective and draws on ecological learning approaches for skill development in group settings. Particular attention is given to developing effective facilitation strategies through achieving greater self-awareness and active sensing. Participants will also learn about the emerging models of group work which focus on collaboration, community-building and creativity.

Example Session Format
The training adapts to the host organization’s needs, but a typical three-session arc looks like this:
Session 1 — Overview and Environment as Teacher. Integrates trauma-informed principles into group dynamics and professional development. Focuses on environmental context for skill development using constraints-led and ecological learning approaches. Topics include designing activities for real-life scenarios in trauma recovery, self-regulation, and wellbeing; understanding group dynamics; and adapting to individual needs within the group setting.
Session 2 — Facilitator Neutrality and Group Structure. Emphasizes the importance of facilitator neutrality, structured sessions, and managing group dynamics through a trauma-informed lens. Topics include effective facilitation strategies; enforcing group rules and norms while cultivating emotional safety and respect; managing appropriate disclosures; facilitating private discussions for individual attention; and reflections on the role of personal development.
Session 3 — Scaffolding and Session Management. Focuses on scaffolding for individual support between group sessions, maintaining neutrality, and managing emotional responses in a group setting. Topics include private conversations for individual support, pre-session preparation, facilitator neutrality during sessions, managing group dynamics, and recognizing when individuals may not be suited for group participation.
Fees
The base fee for this workshop is $4500 plus GST (plus travel, if required). Social service organizations may qualify for a discount.
